Susan Kaye Stacey
March 3, 1945 - April 22, 2022
Susan Kaye Stacey, an interior designer and longtime Utah community volunteer, died on April 22, 2022 at the age of 77 in Salt Lake City.
Susan was born March 3, 1945 to Roman and Lorraine Winkelman in Sacramento, CA, and her family moved around northern California throughout her childhood in the service of her father’s Methodist ministry. She lived in San Francisco until she was 7 years old, and
returned there for college after graduating from Thomas Downey High School in Modesto in 1963. In 1966 she married James William Stacey, a Utah-born bank examiner living in San Francisco, and they moved to Ogden, UT in 1969 to raise their family.
She was a ubiquitous community volunteer in Ogden, serving with the Junior League, Family Support Center, First Presbyterian Church, and other organizations while raising her children and embarking on a career in interior design and home furnishing sales. Susan left Ogden in 1989 and eventually settled in Salt Lake City, where her career flourished. Determined to complete the college degree she began after high school, she earned a Bachelor’s in Communications from Westminster College in 1997. She was proud to work until the end of her life at a job she loved, selling commercial and residential floor covering for Lemco Design in Salt Lake City.
Family was the cornerstone of Susan’s life, and she will be dearly missed as the matriarch who never let an opportunity pass for a family gathering and meal. She loved parties and concerts, tennis with her friends, traveling with her grandchildren, holidays of any kind, and the fellowship of her church. She also loved wearing purple, growing flowers, an evening glass of wine, schmaltzy movies, and wearing silly hats.
Susan is survived by two children, Clark Stacey and Amber Espanet, their spouses Jennie and Aaron, grandchildren Julian, Phoebe, Acqua, Amelia, and James, and siblings Lee Anne, David, and Mark. She was preceded in death by her sister Joy and her beloved partner Jim Barry.
Services will be held on Sunday, May 1 from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Starks Funeral Parlor. Guests are encouraged to use the North side parking lot.
In Loving Memory
My sincere condolences to Clark, Amber and her wonderful grandchildren. Susan was a delight to know. We regret we are out of town for her memorial service. Holding the family in our hearts.
