Susan Lynne Tolley

With deep love and sorrow, the family of Susan L. Tolley (Thayer) announces her passing on October 9, 2025, at the age of 71. Susan left this world peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of family members and the gentle companionship of her beloved cats, Poppy and Simon.

Born on August 22, 1954, Susan lived a life defined by extraordinary selflessness, quiet strength, humor, and boundless compassion. After the passing of her father, Max Douglas Tolley, at the young age of 56, Susan devoted herself to caring for her mother, Vesta, with unwavering dedication and tenderness. In doing so, she embodied a life of quiet sacrifice — giving freely of her time, energy, and heart without ever seeking recognition.

Susan’s love extended far beyond her immediate family. She was a fierce advocate for her nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews — especially for those who were vulnerable or marginalized. She had a gift for seeing the good in everyone and for making others feel worthy, valued, and loved. Her empathy knew no bounds, and her self-deprecating humor brought light to even the darkest days. She had a loyal posse of lifelong friends from school, work, and letter writing who were with her — laughing and reminiscing — until her last days.

A lifelong animal lover, Susan’s heart was never complete without the loyal companionship of her many pets, who received the same fierce love and care she gave to her family and friends.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Max Douglas and Vesta Tolley; her brother Craig; her sister Dana (Brent Randall); and her nephew Jared, with whom she now rests in peace.

She is survived by her brothers Mike (Janice), Dwight (Kris), and Kevin (Kristy) Tolley; loving nephews Scott (Debra), Michael (Kimberley), Kraig (Adrianna), Kristopher (Ann), Marshall (Desiree), and Dallas (Missy); and beloved nieces Brooke, Paige (Doug), Ashlyn (Kelly), Heather (Derek), Hillarie, Jenny (Scott), Andrea (Nick), and Monica (Dan); as well as numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, caregivers, family, and friends, and especially to Shannon Dallin and niece Ashlyn Pehrson, who supported Susan following her open-heart surgery and throughout her courageous battle with cancer. Your compassion, skill, and kindness brought her comfort, dignity, and peace — and your care will never be forgotten.

In honoring her wishes, a private family graveside service will be held. Those wishing to celebrate Susan’s life and spirit are encouraged to show kindness to someone in need, write a letter to a pen pal, speak up for those without a voice, or support a local animal shelter — simple acts that reflect the way she lived every single day.

She will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Larkin Sunset Gardens in the Garden of Gethsemane.  A celebration of life is tentatively planned for her birthday next year, in the summer of 2026.

Her legacy is one of love without condition, compassion without limits, and laughter through adversity. She made the world softer, brighter, and kinder — simply by being in it.

Her generosity, humor, and love will live forever in the hearts of those she so deeply touched.
