Terry Floyd Callahan

October 30, 1945 - January 10, 2024

In loving memory, Terry Floyd Callahan dedicated his life to his family and country, peacefully passing away on January 10, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born on October 30, 1945, in Garden City, Kansas, to Larry Gene Callahan and Zerita May Davis, Terry excelled in sports and academics. Graduating in 1963 from Liberal High School in Kansas, he earned recognition as “First Team All-State” in basketball and later received a football scholarship to Coffeyville Community College. In 1964, Terry was awarded another football scholarship to the University of Utah, after which he transferred to Westminster College. He was inducted into Coffeyville’s “Football Hall of Fame” in 2002.

In 1969, Terry was drafted into the U.S. Army at the height of the Vietnam War. He proudly served as a field medic with the 25th Infantry Division and First Air Cavalry Division. He was presented with two bronze stars for meritorious service in ground operations against hostile forces. Additionally, he was recognized for several other medals for distinguished services as well.

Upon being honorably discharged in 1971, Terry returned to Salt Lake City, where he earned a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Utah. He continued his education by earning a second Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Fordham University. In 1973, he accepted a position with the U.S. Courts District of Utah as a U.S. Probation Officer. He retired as the Chief U.S. Probation Officer of Utah.

Terry spent his time as a dedicated, hands-on, and loving father to his two sons, Bryce and Jace. He instilled in them his wisdom, work ethic, humor, and appreciation for life. He loved every minute of coaching their teams, long road trips, and teaching them everything he could about life. Terry loved an adventure, whether it was a trip to Yellowstone or a flight around the world. Hawaii, Africa, and Ireland were a few of his favorites. He was a hero and role model to both of them and will be greatly missed.

Terry loved spending time with friends on the golf course, tennis courts, and at Einstein Bagels. During the past few years, he shared his time between Salt Lake City and St. George, Utah, with his wife, Teresa (Teri) Mellott Callahan. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, and biking.

Terry’s interest in others was always appreciated and loved by all who came in contact with him. His keen sense of humor and zest for life will always be remembered, and he was loved by all who knew him.

The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to the doctors and nurses at the University of Utah Hospital for their dedication and excellent care.

Terry is survived by his wife Teresa (Teri) Mellott Callahan, sons Bryce and Jace Callahan, stepson Raphael Khan, siblings Garry Callahan and Kelli Callahan Philips, nephews Terry Medina, Troy Callahan, and niece Amy Murphy.

A Celebration of Life will be announced.

I'm so sorry to hear of Terry's passing. My mom Kathie Rose worked with Terry at the U.S. Probation office for many years and she spoke very highly of him. I became personally acquainted with Terry when I'd visit my mom at the office over the years. She passed away nearly three years ago and would want me to send condolences to the family as he was one of her favorites in the office. Sending kind wishes to you all.
