Timothy Jon Nelson Sr.

March 2, 1958 - May 24, 2011

Timothy Jon Nelson Sr.

Utah filmmaker Tim Nelson passed away May 24, 2011. The beloved filmmaker’s body of work lives on, his lessons and stories survive, the memories of his goodness and kind acts remain vivid in the hearts and minds of all those who knew him and who love him.

Timothy Jon Nelson, Sr. was born in North Dakota on March 2, 1958, the 5th child of 7 to Floyd and Dolores Nelson. In 1978, a job opportunity as an Artist in Residence at a public television station in Lincoln, Nebraska led to a serendipitous meeting with a lovely Nebraska farm girl, Deborah K. Peterson.  That chance meeting led to love and marriage, three children, and an adventure that would span more than 30 years.

Tim’s passion was telling stories that uplift and inspire, teach and empower.  He wrote and directed many films that garnered dozens of awards.  “Jumping for Joy” won the “Audience Choice Award” at the Newport Beach Film Festival, the “Top Applause Award” at the Valencia International Film Festival, and the “Citation of Excellence” award at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival.

Tim was an advocate for adolescent victims of abuse.  His compassion for these children led him to create the Salt Lake Children’s Film Festival to benefit the Children’s Justice Centers in Utah.

His colleagues elected him Chairman of the Board of the Motion Picture Association of Utah (MPAU) where he labored tirelessly to push the State government and the Legislature to promote the film industry he loved, all while fighting the effects of cancer and undergoing countless surgeries and treatments.  Even when tethered to oxygen and undergoing chemotherapy he kept his cell phone at his side and continued fighting for principles he believed in.  The industry is in a better place because of the sacrifices and support of Tim and his family.

He drew his strength and drive to succeed from the love of his family.  Without their shared commitment he would not have been able to accomplish such remarkable tasks.  Their kinship looks like something out of one of Tim’s stories.  Their warmth could make anyone near feel like they are part of the family.  Tim’s children were his heart, soul, and inspiration.

In the words of Tim… Live your life.  Love your life.

He is survived by his extraordinary wife and infinite strength Debi and their three phenomenal children T.J. (Timothy Jon Jr.), Kathryn and Anni, his parents Floyd and Dee Nelson, siblings Greg (nephew Shep and his wife Elena, nieces Amelia and Rebecca, her fiancé Clay and their mother Lesley), Judy (nephews Rory [Tim’s godson] and Joseph), Barbara, Bob (wife Maria and nephews Jonathon and Gregory), Wendy (husband Keola, nephew Eric, niece Katy) and Amy.

The empty space he left behind will be impossible to fill.

Tim and his family will be forever grateful to the many friends who have shared in their lives and family that have given such endless support.  They would also like to thank Utah Cancer Specialists Dr. Jonathan Whisenant and Dr. Kent Difiore for their expertise of treatment, the incredible staff that served Tim with such compassion, humor and dignity, and the CNS Hospice staff who honored Tim and Debi’s final wishes.

Tim, Debi and the children would like to thank and acknowledge the kindness, generosity and support of everyone who has touched their lives and accompanied them on their life’s journey.

Life is what you make it.  Never say “it can’t be done” because it can be done, whatever it is.

Funeral service will be held at 6:00 PM on Saturday, May 28th at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Friends may call upon the family at a wake in celebration of Tim’s life immediately following the service until 9:00PM.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to Children’s Justice Center.

In Loving Memory

Debi and Family, Tim was (and is) a unique man who always wore his heart on his sleeve. I will always be inspired by the energetic attitude he exuded when serving others and the compassion he felt for his fellow man. The world is missing one of it's friendliest smiles.

Tim's passing really caught me by surpise. I didn't know he was sick. I didn't know Tim that well, having just worked on a couple of videos with him. But he did leave a big, postive mark in this world.

Dear Deb, TJ, Kathyrn & Annie, My heartfelt sympathy goes to each of you during this time of transition. Tim was a very dear colleague, friend and brother to me thru out the years. He brought a contagious passion to everything he touched and met all situations with an open mind, heart and soul in life. I will forever be thankful for having know him. Over the last remaining years of his life he continually humbled me by his extreme courage and strength to take on his condition and tackle it head on. I witnessed the true meaning of single minded passion. And to his credit, I am forever changed. Thank you for always graciously sharing Tim with the rest of us! Love, Francine

Tim's passion and strength were tremendously inspirationational to us as we began our colon cancer advocacy work back in 2006. His "can do" attitude was consistently on display, even in the face of trying circumstances. He was an amazing artist and human being, and will be missed.

What a privilege and pleasure it was to work with Tim in some of his wonderful creative endeavors. He will be sorely missed. I was out of town when he died and am just reading his beautiful and fitting obituary. You & your children were fortunate to have him in your lives. We all are better people by having known Tim.

Tim and I went to high school together at Wasatch Academy. I had not seen him in years until I flew out last summer to see him with another Wasatch friend. Tim bought an expensive bottle of champagne, I bought the chocolate. We sat on the deck overlooking the mountains and talked as though not a moment had passed since our heart-to-heart talks at age 17. What a joy it was to know that friends of the soul remain the deepest and best of friends, no matter how much time has passed. It was wonderful to meet Debi and the girls, then, too. I will carry with me Tim's love of life, his courage and passion. To all of Tim's family, I send my love and blessings.

Tim changed my life in profound ways. From helping me get my first job out of high school to teaching me to try to live life fully every day his influence is there. I will miss him. To Debi, Anni, Kathryn, Tim Jr., and all of Tim's family, my heart goes out to you.

I met Tim through Laurence Lau over eight years ago. Tim was kind enough to read one of my screenplays and give me wonderful feedback. We finally had the chance to meet, in person, when I visited SLC about five years ago. He was as delightful in person as he had been on our emails. He spoke proudly of his family and his love for his work. Even though he was ill when we met, he took the time to give me valuable feedback on my writing. His generosity was inspiring. My sincere condolences to the Nelson family. Karen Sorenson Bartelt
