Virginia 'Gini' Blanche Haig McCarter

March 15, 1921 - June 18, 2013

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Virginia “Gini” McCarter, passed away on June 18, 2013 in Salt Lake City, at age 92. “I was born, I played, I loved, I cared and I called it a day.”  When asked how she was doing in her later years, Nana would offer her “organ recital” but always dismissed her age-related discomfort with a chuckle and said, “Oh well, it doesn’t do any good to complain, so how are YOU doing?” Many times over the past few years we saw her strong will and determination conquer the illnesses that hospitalized her, always striving to return home where she was happiest. She loved the beauty of children and flowers, laughter, dogs and cats, a balanced checkbook and Big Lots, sweets and Chinese food, working in her garden, and most of all making sure we knew that she loved and accepted each of us inside her family and out. She believed in the good-hearted and shored up anyone she thought could use her help and faith in them.

Born to Henry Earl and Jeanette Thomas Mackintosh, Virginia “Gini” grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from West High School, Class of 1937. She married James Haig in 1940 and moved to California’s Bay Area. Following James' death in 1959, she returned to Salt Lake City and later married Murray V McCarter in 1968.

She is preceded in death by her husbands; her sister (Marjorie Peck); brother (Jack Earl Mackintosh); sons (Jim Haig and Murray Shaun McCarter); and granddaughter (Amy Gebhardt Thayer).

Surviving family members include: Michael “Kim” McCarter (Judy), Mrs. James (Vicki) Haig, Gary Gebhardt (Joan), Kathy McCarter Farmer, Jan Johnson (Ted), Lyn McCarter (Priscilla Schowalter), 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City, on Saturday June 29, 2013 at 10:00 AM.

Many thanks to Starks Funeral Parlor for the excellent care and attention paid to funerary details.

In lieu of flowers please perform an act of kindness or donate to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
