Wendy Susan Mounteer Brodbeck

4/21/1966 – 8/27/2011

On August 27, 2011, Wendy Susan Brodbeck surrendered her spirit to God and was finally free after an incredibly valiant 5 year battle against cancer.  Wendy is a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and loyal friend.  Although we will always miss her physical presence, we take comfort in knowing she is comfortable and well and will always lovingly watch over us.

Wendy was born on April 21, 1966 to Evelyn Olga (Olsen) Cline and Glen Archie Mounteer.  Raised in Sandy, Utah, she was the youngest of seven children.  From an early age Wendy was a hard worker, often working 30 or more hrs/week, while attending high school and college.  She attended Alta High School where she participated in many activities including debate, writing for the school newspaper and the National Honor Society.  After graduating from Alta High School in 1984, she attended the University of Utah where she was awarded BA degrees in English and Political Science in 1989.  During these years, Wendy became lifelong friends with Kim Washburn, Lisa Randles and Dollie McFarlin.

After graduating from the University of Utah, Wendy worked for Digital Equipment Corp until 1996.  She also attended Westminster College where she worked toward an MBA degree.  In November 1991, Wendy and Bob were introduced by her friend and co-worker Rose Poulsen (Rose and her husband Vince were two of Bob’s closest friends).  Wendy and Bob began dating and were soon inseparable.  They were married on June 4, 1993.

Wendy continued working at Digital Equipment until 1996 when she started working at ATK Launch Systems in the Publications Department.  Her talents and hard work catapulted Wendy into the position of Lead Technical Writer after just a few months on the job.  On Wendy’s birthday in 1998, Wendy and Bob were blessed by the birth of their 1st son Gabe.  We were blessed again in March of 2000 with our 2nd son Josh.

After Josh was born, Wendy stopped working so that she could spend more time with our boys.  Wendy loved to “hang” with our boys, doing craft projects, reading to them and of course finding/planning vacations and adventures for our family.  She was the awesome kind of mom that would get right down and “build-it” or “play-it” with our boys like she was one of them.  Wendy enjoyed many things in life, but Gabe and Josh were the center of her universe.

Wendy is survived by her husband Bob, her sons Gabe and Josh, brothers and sisters Ann Cunningham (Mark), Lisa Killian, Mitchell Mounteer (Debbie Hahn), Jeff Mounteer, and Melanie Mounteer.  She is also survived Bob’s parents Ken and Marian Klise, his sister Lisa Fall (Ken), 2 step-sisters Linda Klise and Ellen Mitchell (Tom), and 2 nephews and 4 nieces, Brent Killian, Elliot Fall, Natalie Fall, Amanda Mitchell, Libby Mitchell (Ryan Hoglund) and Cate Kizerian (Dave).  Wendy was preceded in death by her mother and father, and her oldest brother, John Mounteer.

We had 5 beautiful years of spoiling our boys before Wendy was diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2006.  We were blessed with a fantastic medical team directed by our Oncologist Dr. Nitin Chandramouli at Utah Cancer Specialists.  Dr. Chandramouli’s creativity, compassion and fighting spirit, enabled our family to have years of companionship and memories.  We owe Dr. Chandramouli and the entire staff at UCS our gratitude for treating us like family throughout our 5 year battle. We also owe our gratitude to Dr. Barbara Rizzardi for her caring, professional and practical help, and to the nurses, aids and staff at Sandy Health and Rehab for providing kind and gentle care for Wendy during the last few months.

During our 5 year battle, we were blessed by the love, kindness and generosity of many families, friends and co-workers.  The constant support of Bob’s parents Ken and Marian Klise made many things possible.  We are also especially grateful to the families from our two faith communities (Community of Grace Presbyterian Church and Grace Lutheran School and Church) and to Bob’s former boss (Steve Metcalf) and co-workers that selflessly carried Bob’s load so that he could care for Wendy during her illness.

A Celebration of Wendy’s life will be held at 6 pm on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Community of Grace Presbyterian Church, 2015 E. Newcastle Drive, Sandy.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to The Road Home, 210 South Rio Grande Street, Salt Lake City, Utah  84101 or online at www.roadhome.org.
