Merica Ann Hale

In Loving Memory

I just woke from a dream. Where Merica and I were hanging out. Griffin was itty bit and in the front seat of a car and Courtney and Ziola in off road vehicle right behind it. Griffin was a baby and I remember thinking "he's tinier than the last time I saw him in person" (which was 20yrs ago). Merica was so proud and taking a picture of him. Meanwhile Courtney started to drive the car behind and ran up and over the tires and wall he was between. Merica yelled out his name to him to warn him he didn't have room, but was cut short as he made it through.   Then my alarm went off...

And here I am looking for her linkedin so I can send some love. Merica is such a bright light in my life and in my heart a true kindred spirit. When we both left California we stayed in touch very seldom, yet she was one of my dearest friends. I hope she knew that.  My memories with her are vivid and she inspired me in so many ways. Her trip to Africa with her sister, being an amazing mom and keeping it real. Her honesty and truth and joy, her love for her family and how she and Courtney worked together.  Encouraging me to take on debt and go for my dreams.
I know this is almost 2 years later...  Courtney, Griffin and Ziola you are in my hearts, sending you all so much love. If you are ever in Arizona you are welcome.  Awe shucks wish there were more I could say. I'm super bummed and grateful and filled with joy all at once.  I love you Merica ✨

Merica made all of us newbies to neonatal fellowship at U of U feel at home. Her competence and lightness of spirit have helped many of us through hard days. An amazing person and scientist. Life is so unfair, taking the best of us away. Merica, your life was so important. Thank you for everything.

Merica's strength, love and determination were an inspiration to all. She lived life every minute and touched so many lives. What a force. She will be missed tremendously.

I extend my deepest love, condolences, and sympathy to Merica’s family. She was the finest person I’ve ever known. She brought infinite amounts of warmth, love, laughter, humanity, compassion, wisdom, and other remarkable qualities (too many to list here) into this world.  What an extraordinary life she lived. I’ve never known anyone more beloved than Merica, or someone who single-handedly touched so many lives. I’ve had a special place in my heart for Merica for over 30 years. Even though the world is dimmer without her, the fact that Merica Ann Hale walked this earth, and shined so brightly during her journey, gives me enduring hope, and will help sustain me on my own path for all my days.

I’ll always love you, my sister.
