Mildred 'Millie' Marie Orlando Carl

Our loving and beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2018 at the age of 98.
Millie was born on May 22, 1920 in Murray, Utah to Felix and Adeline (Perrella) Orlando, the second oldest of six children. When she was six the family moved to Tooele, Utah where she graduated from Tooele High School in 1939, moved to Salt Lake and attended Excelsius Beauty School. She worked in beauty shops and out of her home doing hair. She was introduced to future husband, Roy (Pete) Carl (deceased in 2003) and they were married on December 25, 1943 at St. Marguerite’s Catholic Church. They lived in Kansas and Salinas, CA while Pete was in the military, moving home to Tooele while he was overseas. When WWII ended they moved to Salt Lake and started their life together. They had two children and lived near Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, SLC where she was a member for 58 years until she moved to her Holladay Condo to be closer to her children.
Starting in 1966, she worked a total of 15 years for Auerbach’s at their downtown and Fashion Place Mall locations until they closed. She was then hired by Nordstom at Crossroads Mall, working 11 more years until retiring at 72. She loved helping customers in jewelry and handbags. Having never obtained a driver’s license, she rode the bus every day.
She was a wonderful mother and wife, her family being most important to her. She was a fantastic cook, famous for her lasagna, fried chicken, all types of pies, and delightful Italian cookies - scalinies and pizelles. She could cook anything and turn leftovers into delicious meals. People were always welcome to eat and the aroma from her cooking always made you want to stay.
All three grandchildren attended Judge Memorial, always parking their cars at grandma’s house, knowing there was always a treat for them at the end of the day on their way home.
She was a life-long member of the Italian American Civic League, actively involved for over 60 years, serving as President for two. She was proud of her Italian heritage, traveling to her father’s hometown of Agnone in 1982. She volunteered at the Catholic Book Store until its closure. She enjoyed shopping, traveling and knitting.
Her family was her greatest joy, getting together almost every week for a celebration. She was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers Frank and Pasquale; and her infant sister, Florence Rose. She leaves behind her heartbroken family; son Thomas (Shauna); granddaughter Antonie (Sean) Kershner; daughter Suzanne (Kim) Naylor; grandchildren Nicholas; Angela (Derek) Preble; and cherished great-grandchild, Caiden Preble; who will miss her beautiful smile, words of encouragement, and amazing cooking; brother Donald Orlando; sister Florence Edde; nieces; nephews; and her four lunch friends Margaret, Ariella, Maxine, and Nola.
A special thank you to all the remarkable ladies from Visiting Angels who helped mom after her stroke allowing her to continue living at home, especially Rebecca, Carol, and Robin, Harmony therapist, Joe and CNA, Zaneida. Also thank you to the kind employees at The Wellington where she lived this year and Edith and Susan from CNS, caring for mom in her final days.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary and Vigil will be held Tuesday December 4, 2018, at 6:00pm at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, 1375 East Spring Lane, Holladay. Friends may visit with the family after until 8:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday December 5, 2018, at 11:00am also at St. Vincent, a luncheon will follow. Graveside Services will be held at 2:00pm at Wasatch Lawn, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Sister Angela’s Assistance Fund at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church.
